Running in Qatar has changed more in the last decade than in the thirty years before it. When I started training for my first half marathon in Doha in 2014, the running community was small, informal, and almost invisible. Today, Qatar hosts one of the most celebrated road races in the world, a thriving local race calendar that runs from October through April, dedicated women's race series, and a community of active women who show up to the start line week after week.
This is my personal guide to the running races I love in Qatar — what makes each one special, what to expect on the day, and how to prepare. Whether you are lacing up for your first 5K or building toward a full marathon, there is a race in Doha for you.
1. Doha Marathon by Ooredoo — Qatar's Flagship Race
Distance options: 5km · 10km · 21km · 42km · Kids Fun Run When: January (annually) Route: Doha Corniche — starts and finishes at Hotel Park Website: https://dohamarathonooredoo.com
If you run in Qatar, this is the race. The Doha Marathon by Ooredoo is Qatar's largest sporting event, drawing over 20,000 runners from 160 nationalities. It holds a World Athletics Label Gold designation — the same standard as the world's elite road races — and the course record was set in 2026 by Olympic marathon champion Tamirat Tola in 2:05:40.
But what makes it special for the rest of us is the Corniche.
The route runs along Doha's waterfront, with the skyline of West Bay on one side and the Arabian Gulf on the other. In January, the weather is cool — typically between 14–20°C in the early morning — which makes it the closest thing Qatar gets to perfect running conditions. The atmosphere on race day is electric: hydration stations every 3km, professional timing, a finisher's medal, and a Marathon Village at Hotel Park running all week with food, entertainment, and wellness zones.
For Qatari runners, the Al Adaam category offers special cash prizes for top local finishers — a thoughtful recognition of homegrown talent that I particularly appreciate. I personally won twice, once for the 42km and once for the 21km.
All proceeds are donated to local charities. So every step you take is doing something beyond the finish line.
What to wear: January mornings on the Corniche can be cooler than you expect, especially with the sea breeze. I recommend a lightweight long-sleeve performance top and full-length tights. Our Performance collection is designed exactly for these conditions — breathable enough for when you warm up, but with enough coverage to stay comfortable at the start line.
2. Al Adaid Desert Challenge — The Race That Earns Its Name
Distance options: 21km run · 10km run (plus MTB categories) When: February (annually) Route: Sealine to Khor Al Adaid (the Inland Sea) More info: https://z-adventures.org/qatar-running-series.html
This is not a race for the faint-hearted — and that is exactly why I love it.
The Al Adaid Desert Challenge takes you from Sealine across 21km of desert terrain to Khor Al Adaid — the Inland Sea, one of Qatar's most extraordinary natural wonders and a UNESCO-recognised reserve where the sea meets the desert in the middle of the dunes. The only way to get there is on foot, crossing five sand dunes along the way.
The dunes are the race. Every runner who has done Al Adaid knows that the flat parts in between give you just enough time to question your life choices before the next dune appears. The sand grabs your feet, your lungs work harder than they ever do on a road, and the finish line — when the Inland Sea finally comes into view — is one of the most breathtaking moments in Qatar running.
A 10km option is also available for those who want a taste of the desert without the full dune gauntlet. The race is part of the UCI International Cycling Union calendar for its MTB category, which gives it a level of organization that makes it a reliable and well-managed event. I ran this race 3 times and won. It's one I don't like to miss.
What to wear: Desert running demands different gear to road running. You want full leg and arm coverage to protect against sand and sun — and you want it lightweight. Loose, breathable fabric is essential. A secure sports hijab or head cover that won't shift in the wind is non-negotiable. The Shield Cap is my go-to for desert conditions — the built-in cap rim blocks sun and the scarf ends can be wrapped for extra protection.
3. Qatar Running Ladies Series — The Heartbeat of Women's Running in Qatar
Distance options: 800m · 3km · 5km · 10km (varies by race) When: October to March (four-race series, annually) Route: Education City Stadium, Oxygen Park, Aspire and Lusail Multipurpose Hall. Organizer: Qatar Sports For All Federation / Z Adventures More info: https://z-adventures.org/qatar-running-series.html
If the Doha Marathon is the headline event, the Ladies Series is where the women's running community in Qatar actually lives.
This three-to-four-race series runs through the cooler months at several locations, one of which is Education City — one of Doha's most beautiful running environments, with wide paths, green spaces, and the landmark Education City Golf Club and Qatar National Library nearby. It is a ladies-only event: no male participants, no male spectators inside the arena. For many women in Qatar, that safe and supportive environment is what makes it possible to race at all — and what makes it so well attended.
Distances range from 800m to 10km, which makes it genuinely accessible for all fitness levels. It is chip-timed and officially organized with course marshals, medical support, and finisher's medals. The community atmosphere at the Ladies races is unlike anything else on the Qatar calendar — the energy of a field of women running together, cheering each other on, is something you have to experience.
The Ladies Ramadan Series runs an equivalent four-race program during Ramadan, with races held at Education City Football Stadium. Our first community race sponsorship was for the Spring Series 2026.
What to wear: races start in the early morning. Layers are your friend — a lightweight long-sleeve top that you can move freely in, and tights or performance trousers. Given that this is a women's-only event, many runners use it as an opportunity to race without their full outer layers. Our Leisure collection works well here for women who want style alongside performance.
4. Qatar East to West Ultramarathon — The Big One
Distance: 90km (individual or relay teams of 2–6) When: December (annually) Route: Sheraton Hotel Park, Doha Corniche → Dukhan Beach (west coast) Organiser: Qatar Ultra Runners / Qatar Sports For All Federation Website: https://qatarultrarunners.com
This is the race that puts everything else in perspective.
The Qatar East to West Ultramarathon is the first and longest road running race in Qatar — 90 kilometers from the Doha Corniche on the eastern coast to Dukhan Beach on the western coast, cutting across the full width of the country through some of its most iconic and remote terrain. It starts at 5:00am from Sheraton Hotel Park and passes through West Bay, QNCC, Qatar Foundation, Education City Stadium, Al Shahaniya, and the vast desert expanse before reaching Dukhan Beach — the kind of route you simply cannot experience any other way.
The race began in December 2017 with just 15 participants — a group of young runners and enthusiasts from the Qatar Ultra Runners group who had an ambitious idea. The Qatar Sports For All Federation adopted and developed it from there. By the 8th edition in 2025, it drew 1,500 participants from 73 nationalities, including 267 women — a remarkable growth story that mirrors the broader rise of women's running in Qatar.
Individual runners complete the full 90km — a feat that typically takes between six and sixteen hours depending on pace and conditions. Relay teams of two to six runners split the course across six segments of 12–16km each, making the race genuinely accessible to runners who want to be part of the event without completing the full distance solo.
This is not a race you enter on a whim. Individual participants need a solid base of long-distance running and a specific training programme. But the relay option means that a team of six — even with mixed experience levels — can take on one of the Gulf's most extraordinary running challenges together. I participated 4 times in relay teams and absolutely love the experience! Another one not to miss.
What to wear: 90km or a relay leg through Qatar's desert at dawn requires layers you can remove as the temperature rises. Start with a lightweight long-sleeve performance top and full-length tights. A secure head cover is essential for the desert sections — the Top It Off Beanie under the Wrap and Rise Hijab gives you maximum security for a multi-hour effort.
5. Theeb Desert Ultramarathon — Qatar's Wildest Race Weekend
Distance options: 10km · 25km · 50km run · 25km · 50km MTB · Combo (MTB + run) When: November (annually, over two days) Route: Zekreet area — desert terrain passing Al Theeb Village and Brouq Nature Reserve Organizer: Trail Sport and Qatar Sports For All Federation Recognition: International Trail Running Association (ITRA) official ranking event
If you want to understand what Qatar's landscape actually looks like beyond the city, Theeb is the race that shows you.
The Theeb Desert Ultramarathon takes place every November in the Zekreet area — a remote, strikingly beautiful desert region in northwest Qatar, home to the Al Theeb Village ruins, the Brouq Nature Reserve, and Qatar's famous East-West sculpture. The course passes through light and medium sand, rocky terrain, and open desert — varied ground that demands proper trail preparation and rewards runners with scenery that road races simply cannot offer.
What makes Theeb unique on the Qatar calendar is the two-day format and the combination options. Day one is mountain biking (25km or 50km). Day two is trail running (10km, 25km, or 50km). Competitors can enter either discipline individually — or take on the full combo, competing in both the bike and run stages for the ultimate test of desert endurance. The 2025 edition drew 1,033 participants across running and cycling categories.
The event, initially started in 2019, has grown from an idea by a group of young Qataris into one of the region's most recognised off-road endurance events. It is officially recognised by the International Trail Running Association, meaning top finishers earn ITRA international ranking points — significant for competitive trail runners building a global race record.
A special children's category (Alpha Theeb and Beta Theeb) has been added for ages 3–14 in the cycling stage, making it a genuine family event for Qatar's outdoor-active community. I participated twice in this event in the 25km distance and one of those two times was with my son when he was 6. It's my season opener go-to race.
What to wear: Theeb is November desert terrain — cooler than summer but still requiring sun protection, full coverage for sand and scrub, and gear that performs on uneven ground. A fitted base layer under a looser outer piece works well for the temperature variation between morning start and midday running. The Rhythm Hijab — with its built-in flexible cap rim and integrated coverage — is ideal for desert trail conditions.
Running in Qatar as a Modest Woman: Practical Tips
Qatar's race calendar is genuinely welcoming for modest women runners — between the women's-only series and the inclusive atmosphere of the major road races, you will not feel out of place. A few things I have learned over years of racing here:
Start early. All major races in Qatar start between 5:30am and 7:00am to make the most of the cooler morning air. Give yourself time to warm up and settle in before the gun.
Dress for the conditions, not just the distance. Qatar's cooler months (October–April) are perfect for running, but morning temperatures can still surprise you with wind chill, especially on the Corniche. A lightweight long-sleeve layer is almost always worth it.
Head covers need to be secure. This sounds obvious, but running at race pace with a loose head cover is genuinely uncomfortable. Our Head Covers collection is engineered specifically for high-intensity movement — the Top It Off Beanie provides a secure inner layer, while the Wrap and Rise Hijab and Shield Cap are built to stay in place at pace.
Hydration starts before the race. Qatar's humidity, even in January, means you dehydrate faster than you expect. Hydrate well the evening before and the morning of race day — do not rely solely on the on-course water stations.
Join the community. The Qatar running community — and particularly the women's running community — is one of the warmest I have encountered anywhere. Groups like the Athletic Edge and Run the World and the broader Qatar Running Series network are full of women who will support you from first 5K to full marathon.
